Webster County exceeding expectations

We’ll just get right to the point – Webster County IS NOT pursuing additional tax dollars from homeowners for the upcoming fiscal year. The numbers don’t lie.

Municipal budgeting is starting to wind down, and the numbers are trickling in. Budgets are mostly penciled out, and we’re moving on to the public hearing stage. By now, all property owners have received their letter containing their respective taxing authority public hearings. But this year’s ‘Statement to Owners and Taxpayers’ shows something a little unique on it – something you don’t see every year.

Webster County is not pursuing additional tax dollars from homeowners. We’re often told from our taxing entities that the tax levy rate is going down. While yes, that is true, more often than not a property’s assessed value (a vital portion of the taxation formula) has risen, making the claim subjective in most peoples minds.

When you get down to the nuts and bolts at the end of the day, it’s dollars that matter.  If you take another look at Webster County’s portion of the Statement to Owners and Taxpayers, special attention needs to be directed to the Current Property Tax and Proposed Property Tax columns. The proposed property tax for homeowners is less than the current property tax on homeowners.

This means Webster County is doing the same things you’re doing at home. You might be forgoing a Hulu subscription, or opting to bake a birthday cake at home for your child instead of purchasing. You are a subject matter expert at your home budget, knowing where cuts can be made or what can be deferred for the time being. We can see by the dollars, the same thing is gong on at the County level.
