The City of Fort Dodge and Webster County issued a joint media release Friday afternoon announcing an initiative to establish a Public Safety Authority for the creation of a new Law Enforcement Center.
According to the media release, “The need for a modern public safety center has become increasingly urgent. The Webster County jail, housed in the Law Enforcement Center in downtown Fort Dodge, is undersized for the community’s needs and affects the operations of both County and City law enforcement.”
You might be asking yourself ‘what’s different’ from the last push to get a law enforcement center. One of the main differences that we can see is the joint Webster County and City of Fort Dodge venture to accomplish a joint goal. By doing a joint venture, a future bonding question posed to voters could require a lower threshold for approval. Under the last measure, a 60% approval rating was required. Under a joint venture, certain funding avenues would only require a 50% plus 1 approval for passage.
Another thing that is different is citizens can now view an up to the minute listing of the Webster County Jail inmate roster. The media release states the Webster County Jail has a capacity of about 45 inmates. In November of 2024, Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener commissioned a web application for mobile devices. Included on the app is a section for viewing the current inmate roster for the Webster County Jail. According to that roster, Webster County is virtually always over capacity, indicating that additional costs are being incurred locally. As of typing this article today, the roster indicates 50 people are in custody. The roster indicated there were 51 individuals jailed yesterday.
The Fort Dodge City Council will meet for a special meeting on June 30th, 2026 at 5:00 PM in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Building to consider establishing the Webster County Public Safety Authority.
The Webster County Board of Supervisors will take up the same issue during their regularly scheduled meeting June 30th, 2026 at 10:00 AM in the Board of Supervisors’ Room at the Webster County Courthouse.
