Water, Sewer rate hikes eyed for Fort Dodge

The Fort Dodge City Council will consider a set of rate hikes for water and sewer at Monday’s council meeting.

According to the memos from City Manager David Fierke, the City periodically reviews utility rates to operate and maintain the City systems. Fierke wrote “The City Council has traditionally established water and sewer rates for two years at a time. This provides customers with greater predictability while allowing the City to periodically reevaluate utility finances and adjust future rates as needed.”

According to the action item, the rate changes being explored will be for 2027 and 2028.

A customer using the minimal usage amount will see their water portion rise from $27.73 to $28.56 in 2027 and $29.42 in 2028. The average residential customer using 4,500 gallons will see their bill rise from $45.41 to $47.04 in 2027 and $48.72 in 2028.

As far as sewer rates, a customer using the minimal usage amount will see their sewer portion rise from $22.71 to $23.39 in 2027 and $24.09 in 2028. The average residential customer would see rate increases from $29.30 to $30.28 in 2027 and $31.29 in 2028.

The existing $5 monthly Water System Improvement (WSI) charge, and $22.50 monthly Community Sewer Initiative (CSI) charge, which will remain unchanged.

Fierke noted that the proposed rate increases are less than the consumer price index increases for other municipal utilities.
