An online petition is circulating, seeking dress code changes and consistent enforcement at Fort Dodge Community School District.

A growing concern about student dress and appearance by a group of concerned parents prompted the request for action, including body coverage and limiting revealing clothing. Concerns surround extremely short shorts and skirts, as well as bralettes or bra-style tops.
Another portion of the petition addresses animal tails, ears, and collars. The petition asks: “We request that the Board establish clear standards regarding the wearing, carrying, or display of animal tails, animal ears, collars/chokers, leashes, or similar accessories when they are being used to portray, imitate, or signify animal behavior or animal role-play during the regular school day.” Some parents have reported seeing tales attached to ‘plug’ type objects that are sold traditionally in age restricted stores.
The petition seeks “clear and understandable minimum coverage expectations” for both students and parents, as well as teachers and administrators. The group is not seeking uniforms for students, but rather a clearer policy for compliance and enforcement.
The petition is being brought forth under Iowa Code 279.8B, which compels the board of directors of the school district to place a proposal specified in a petition on a regular meeting agenda of the school board. Organizers are seeking to gather 500 signatures, and are over 20% into their goal.
Eligible electors (those who are registered or could become registered to vote) residing in the Fort Dodge Community School District, whether or not they have students in the District, are invited to view and sign the petition at the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSePWgIYyxOSKcM_60JcaHHIQPczWRw_J5MDOZhejnYcL8r3Eg/viewform
