A presentation outlining the proposed North 15th Street improvements has been scheduled for Monday, June 23rd 2025, just before the regularly scheduled council meeting.

The proposed improvements have progressed, but not without a moderate share of public speculation. Opponents of the project have voiced their concerns about reduced capacity from four to three lane conversions, the addition of bike lanes, and the use of city funding.
Many acknowledge North 15th Street as a main thoroughfare with a high traffic count, and have concerns that reducing capacity will increase transit times. Others believe the area will experience long waits and congestion during garbage and recycling pickup, and parcel deliveries as there would be no more passing option paired with no parking. According to the power point attached to the presentation, four to three lane conversion will have ample capacity to accommodate current traffic numbers.
Another concern is the creation of bike lanes at grade on North 15th Street. Avid bicyclists have expressed they would not feel safe traversing North 15th Street combined with motorists. The creation of bike lanes is not printed in the presentation materials, however the ‘Proposed Typical Section’ graphic does indicate a 5.5 unallocated portion on the outermost edges of the roadway, as well as an ‘advisory bike lane’ (dotted lane line) in the Southbound right turn lane from North 15th Street to 2nd Avenue North.

A number of residents believe the City’s portion of the proposed construction costs would be better spent elsewhere, citing streets around town in worse condition than North 15th Street. A petition had been circulated around town, gathering signatures of those opposed to the North 15th Street project. This project comes at the forefront of a City election this fall.
The North 15th Street presentation is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM Monday, June 23rd 2025, with the normal Council business meeting to begin at 6:00 PM at the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building.
