State Fireworks Law Change will have Local Impact

Governor Kim Reyonds signed a slew of bills into law on Monday, once of which will have a local impact this summer.

Governor Reynolds signed off on Senate File 303, a law that prevents Iowa cities and counties from prohibiting or limiting the use of fireworks on July 3, 4 and Dec. 31. This new law would have an impact on local communities that have imposed further restrictions beyond what is outlined in State law.

State law allows fireworks use to begin at 9:00 am, with ending times varying on the particular date and day. In Webster County, Fort Dodge city ordinance did not allow fireworks to begin until 5:00 pm on the dates with the new changes, as well as some communities throughout the County that do not allow any fireworks usage.

As this bill made its way through the Legislature, both Senator Kraayenbrink and Representative Sexton voted in favor, whereas Representative Meyer voted Nay.
