Meyer bill moves to Reynolds’ Desk

Lawmakers gave final approval to House File 516 on Tuesday, which now heads to the Governor’s Desk. If signed, the bill would create residency requirements for the University of Iowa medical and dental schools.

This Bill requires the University of Iowa doctor of medicine and dental programs to enroll at least 80% resident students or to those who meet other requirements.

Proponents have long argued that the bill would help the State’s physician shortage by allowing more applicants from Iowa.

The House passed the legislation on a vote of 61-30. Representative Meyer was House Manager for the bill. Representative Sexton was absent for Tuesday’s vote.
