FDFD to Increase Staffing Levels

A resolution to increase the staffing levels at Fort Dodge Fire Department will come before the Council Monday night.

Under the current staffing model, there are 3 shifts of 13 firefighters, working 24-hour shifts. The proposal calls for increasing the authorization for firefighters from 39 to 42, placing 1 additional firefighter to each of the three shifts.

Bringing on the new firefighters would enhance flexibility and capacity to support the EMS Division when needed. The EMS Division has 6 Paramedic/EMT positions that work 9 AM to 9 PM, with one EMS Supervisor that typically works Monday through Friday, and provides operational support when staffing levels are low. Currently, there are two vacant paramedic positions.

The new firefighter positions will be paid for within the existing budget. The Fiscal Year 2026 budget includes just over $200,000 allotted for overtime. The wages for three entry level firefighters is estimated at $164,368.

The full meeting is scheduled to kick off at 5:00 PM with a North 15th Street Presentation, followed by the regular meeting beginning a 6:00 PM.
