Effective July 1st, any use of an electronic device while operating a motor vehicle will be prohibited, unless they are in a hands free or voice activated operation mode.

Governor Kim Reynolds’ Office

Governor Reynolds signed SF 22, “Hands-Free” Bill into law this week.

“30 States across the country have passed lifesaving, hands-free legislation, and today Iowa became number 31,” said Gov. Reynolds. “It’s especially meaningful that we did so on April 2, exactly two years to the day Roland Taylor was tragically killed by a distracted driver. It was an honor to sign this bill in his memory and in memory of every Iowan lost to distracted driving.”

Local Representative Ann Meyer was the Floor Manager for Senate File 22 (House File 827) while it worked through the House. ‘Hands Free’ legislation had been a priority for Meyer for years.
